Goodbye Generic AI, Hello Personalised Tools

We all have access to the same systems — but some of us get very little out of them, and some of us get a lot.

Today I want to tell you a bit about how to get a lot more from your AI products by getting them to know about you and become more relevant — so they know how to help you best.

Let me show you what that looks like:

The Difference Between Generic and Personal

Imagine I'm asking AI to help me choose what I'm going to have for dinner tonight.

Give me a recipe.

If I ask just a generic AI that doesn't know me, I'll get some random dish.

But if I ask my ChatGPT that knows me really well, it will suggest something that is vegan.

It will possibly go for soup, because it knows I like them, it will go for ingredients it knows I like and avoid very spicy options, because it knows that's a bit much for me.

So, it will suggest something that's quite relevant for me.

How to Make AI Personal?

How do we do that?

Let me show you the three levels of personalisation in we have in ChatGPT:

We start by clicking our avatar on the top right, then going to settings then Personalisation.

Level 1: Custom Instructions

The first level is Custom Instructions.

My custom instructions are turned on.

This is where I can give fixed instructions that I want it to always remember.

For example:

  • Always use Australian spelling

  • My name is Inbal

  • I like my answers short

These are things that are important, not going to change, and help it respond in a way that suits me.

Level 2: Memory

The next level is Memory, I have mine turned on.

This means that during our conversations, ChatGPT can decide that a certain fact it just learned about me is interesting and relevant — and it will commit it to memory.

I can also directly ask it to commit something to memory by saying something like “Remember that I like...”

There’s a Manage memories button that shows all the different memories it has about me, and I can remove the ones I don't like.

For example, it remembered that I have Spotify Premium, which includes access to audiobooks.

So next time it recommends an audiobook, and I ask where to find it, it will first recommend I check my Spotify library before buying it somewhere else.

Level 3: Reference Chat History

The third level, which is relatively new, is Reference Chat History — and, you guessed it, mine is turned on.

This means that when ChatGPT responds to questions, it can look at all the other chats I had with it.

That’s pretty awesome.

The reason I think that's pretty awesome is that now when I ask it for that recipe, it may come back with one that matches my dietary preferences, but it may also say, “Hey — we’ve started working together on some strength personal training recently. You might want something with a bit more protein in it.”

This Applies to Work Too

Choosing is an example from my personal life, but these capabilities delight me at work contexts too, every day.

I can work with it on, “What am I going to put in a newsletter?”, and it might say, “Hey — remember what you did with that client the other day? That's a relevant example.”

It’s Time to Start Using This

So, imagine AI starting to know your world, connect dots you haven’t connected (happens to me all the time), and make suggestions that are actually relevant and immediately useful.

I want you to have that too.

So, turn on all those functions.

In terms of other tools:

Copilot doesn’t have memory just yet — but they've already announced it's coming.

Gemini does — it’s called Saved Info.

But the memory in ChatGPT across all chats is the most advanced capability.

We know these things pop up in all the other tools too.

So, it’s coming to all of them.

Use it.

It will make your experience so much better.

And if you want to make sure your entire team uses these functions effectively, reply to this email — I'm here to help.
