My Holiday Gift: So You Can Give Yourself More Gifts

Today I'm giving you a holiday gift. Because it’s the holidays and because it's summer here in Australia, that makes me extra happy.

It's a gift I gave myself a few months ago, and now I want to give it to you.

The gift? The superpower to create your own accountability tracker.

So you can design the best way for you to make those New Year resolutions really come true.

I'm not selling you an app. I'm showing you how I built mine so you can build yours.

Why I built my own

A few months ago, I tried some journaling and habit tracking apps. They were all doing things the way they thought was right. And so nothing really stuck.

I wanted something that works how I want it. In the colours I want. In the order I want. The way I want.

So I made one.

What I track

Every morning, I log how I slept and set my intentions for the day.

Every evening, I track things that matter to me, like how I did with meditation, exercise, and food choices.

A couple of weeks after I started using it, I added an AI insights buttons that writes a reflection for me based on my recent entries.

I added a notes section for random thoughts.

And my favourite recent addition: a button that generates a personalised morning meditation based on my journal history and reads it to me.

(Next step: training it on my own voice so that I can hear it as a message from the all knowing future-me! How cool is that?)

How you can build yours

I used Lovable, but there are others - Replit, Base44, even Google Gemini builds apps from prompts now.

I just typed something like:

"Build me a daily wellbeing tracker. I want to log how my day goes with smiley face ratings for each category. Track sleep, meditation, exercise, stretching. Split the day into morning and evening sections. In the morning, I want to set my intentions. Keep the design clean, calming, and purple."

That's it. Hit go, and it creates something. You can see it in the video. It’s a pretty good start.

Then we iterate: "Add the option to move through dates so I can edit yesterday’s entries.", "Add a button that generates an AI reflections based on my recent entries. Make it empathetic and coach-like", "Add a button to create a morning meditation based on the themes present in my journaling."

My app updates as I describe what I want.

Watch me build it

I've recorded the whole process for you - how I built mine, how it works, and how you can do the same.

This is your holiday gift from me - which you actually already had even before I gave it to you.

I just wanted to make sure you're aware of your superpowers and that you're using them.

I hope you'll use them to give yourself some gifts for the things you want to achieve next year.

I'm taking a break for the Australian summer and I'll see you mid-January 2025.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

P.S. When you build yours, send me a screenshot. I'd love to see what you create ❤️
