Can AI Make Us More Human?
I use AI all the time.
Not just to help me with my work, but also, to help me understand the world.
And today, I want to share with you a bit of an optimistic view of how I think AI can help us connect better as humans and maybe give us hope for our future as a society.
Let me show you what I mean:
A Polarised World
We live in a very polarised world.
Political opinions, conflicts in the world — they have clear two sides that you're for or against, and it's very hard to have any conversation that will change anybody's mind.
So, I’m not trying to change anybody’s mind.
But I do try to inform myself.
Using AI for Perspective
Here's how I do it:
I go to my favourite AI — usually ChatGPT — and I say:
You are a person who holds these [political views or side of a conflict]. But you’re a thoughtful, intentional, intelligent, articulate person. Tell me your narrative. Tell me how you explain this to yourself.
And then we can have a really good conversation — with AI on the other side, not having their own emotions, not getting angry, not getting defensive.
I can really have a conversation that helps me understand the humanity of people with views that are very different to mine.
This Is New
That is something we could not have done before.
Technology and social media did the opposite — they polarised us.
This — if used well — can bring us together.
And I’m not imagining that the whole world is going to do that.
But I do think that you can.
And that it’s a great exercise.
