Let the AI Lead (Just a Little)
Sometimes we get AI to write a thing for us and it develops this whole big document, which is good, but it's not quite right.
Then we end up spending a lot of time trying to adapt it and adjust it and get it to what we want it to be.
And it can get a bit frustrating, and sometimes I just give up and start again.
There’s a better way.
Let me show you how I do it:
Starting with the Grant Example
Let's imagine I’m applying for a grant.
There’s a 44-page guideline and a sample application form.
I could say: 'write the grant application for me'. But I don't...
Instead, I ask AI:
“This is a grant that I want to apply for. Find the relevant information you already have about us and ask me questions for the information that is missing. Ask me questions one by one.”
The AI then says:
“I’ll guide you through the application process.”
It starts with:
“What type of entity is applying for the grant?”
I answer, then it asks the next question.
We do it step by step, pausing to brainstorm examples when needed.
When done, I ask it — only then — to draft the application.
Testing Across Tools
In the video you can see how I tried the exact same thing with Copilot, Claude, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini.
That's not part of my process. I just wanted to see what I'll get.
Making it even better
So, now we've got a draft application. Ready to submit?
I usually do one more step!
I start a new chat, either in the same tool or with another tool, upload the draft we created and the original guidelines and ask it:
“This is my draft apllication. You are part of the judging panel. Rate my application, what’s good about it? What can we make better?”
Then I'd work with it to improve the things that can be better.
And we’ll make them better together.
My Approach
So, there you have it.
I don’t ask AI to just do the task — I ask it to guide me through the task.
Oh, and my big news!
Do you want to learn AI together?
At the end of July, I'm running an in-person, face-to-face whole day AI bootcamp in Melbourne.
We're going to learn AI together, hands-on, have fun, and even build some automations.
We will share our learning in the room and create a community that will stay for later too.
So, if you want to be part of that, reply to this email and we'll send you all the details.
