Second Brain, Obsidian, and AI: the setup that changes everything

Every AI conversation I have now starts from where the last one ended. That’s a massive leap in how AI works with me.

My AI knows my clients, my KPIs, my coaching patterns. It knows what we talked about last time. It updates itself as we go.

That's because I've given my AI a Second Brain.

And if you have’t already, I think that you should do it too.

Level one: what AI already remembers about you

All the AIs have memory now. ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude. During a conversation, the AI notices something worth keeping and writes a line into its memory file.

It's useful. But it's limited.

It gets stale.

My Copilot still thinks I have 5,200 newsletter subscribers. I'm at 5,500. The memory just hasn't caught up.

So while memory was a wonderful upgrade when it first came out, now we want more. We want our AIs to be up to date on so many things so they can be useful for us.

What's coming: Anthropic's "dreams"

The AI companies know memory isn't enough. Anthropic is experimenting with "dreams." A process that, reads the memory and your recent chats, and reorganises the memory. It merges duplicates. Updates anything outdated. Surfaces new insights.

Sounds awesome!

It's now in Research Preview, available through the API. Not rolled out to everyone yet.

So what do we do now?

In the meantime: the Second Brain

For now, everyone is implementing Second Brains.

A Second Brain is just a folder. With subfolders. With text files inside them.

In mine, there's information I want my AI to always know. My brand. My programs, my clients, my projects. And also my CFO notes (which my AI takes as it acts as my CFO). And many coaching notes about me that my AI takes as it observes my behaviour.

What is Obsidian?

Have you heard people talk about Obsidian?

No big deal at all.

AI likes reading .md files.

Obsidian is a simple desktop editor for to make it easy for us humans to read and edit these files.

That’s it.

The magic: it reads and it writes

The magic of second brain is in the instructions.

We tell our AI to read the Second Brain whenever it talks to us. And also to update it when it talks to us.

So if my AI acts as my coach on presenting or selling, it doesn't need to go through all my session transcripts to know where I'm at. It looks at its coaching notes in the second brain. If it acts as my CFO, it doesn't need to learn my business from scratch. It looks at what we talked about last time, what our KPIs are, what we're trying to achieve.

And it updates. Every time we talk.

When my newsletter grew from 5,200 to 5,500 subscribers, it took a quick note of that.

The Second Brain becomes a rich, up to date, condensed source of context. Into everything current in my business (and some of the rest of my life too).

That is magic!

How to get started

There are many ways to build your Second Brain.

Some people start with an AI interview: you tell it everything about yourself and it creates the initial files.

Some people start blank and let knowledge emerge from conversations. Either works.

However you do it, you will sense the improvement in the way you work with AI immediately.

How did I ever use AI before?

Is this a forever solution? Probably not. At some point, AI will do all of this itself.

And if the investment were big, I would say hold and wait for it to come.

But it is not. It is so easy to implement a second brain system and the return is so quick that I think we should all be doing it now.

Want to build your Second Brain together?

I am going to run a build session with AI with Inbal club members to do this together.

We'll develop one for each of us, write the step-by-step instructions to take back to our teams, and look at how shared Second Brains work across a whole firm.

We are launching on 20 May.

When I am writing this email there are 15 spots left in the founding cohort. Not sure how many there are when you are reading this.

If you’d like to build with us, check if there are still spots here
